Diocesan Assembly and Synodal Journey

“We are about to resume our Diocesan Assembly preparations this month with an on-line meeting with delegates. We will take account of the Covid 19 experience in our preparatory meetings and in the Assembly in spring 2022.

Since we started our Assembly journey in 2019, the Catholic Church throughout the world is about to begin a series of conversations about what God wants of his people at this time. These conversations are often referred to as a Synodal Process. “Synodal” comes from a Greek word which means “walking together”.

In this diocese we are well placed to join in this synodal process because our Assembly journey is within the spirit of synodality.

On Sunday 17th October we mark the opening of this worldwide Synodal Process entitled, “For a Synodal Church: communion, participation and mission”. This Synodal Process and our Assembly coincide with the start of the two-year Synodal Pathway for the Catholic Church in Ireland which will lead, in time, to a National Synodal Assembly in Ireland.

This will be a time of prayer, listening and discernment, in our diocese and in the Catholic Church in Ireland and worldwide. It will allow all people – both within the Church and in society at large, to share their insights into the Catholic Church in Ireland – past, present and future – so that we can prepare for a National Synodal Assembly in the coming years.

To formally begin the Synodal journey, and mark the resumption of our Assembly, Bishop Francis will celebrate Mass in St Mel’s Cathedral on Sunday 17th October at 10am.

This Mass will be broadcast live on Shannonside/Northernsound Radio and on www.longfordparish.com

Feast of St. Pius (Padre Pio) and St. Eunan
September 23rd.
“”To act justly and virtuously is more pleasing to the Lord than sacrifice.””Proverbs 21: 3

God is pleased when we are just in our dealings with others and are upright in our way of life. Such an attitude influences others. They notice how we live our lives and are encouraged to do the same. Actions speak more loudly than words and God is pleased with our efforts.
Today is the feast of St. Pius (Padre Pio) who died 23rd September 1968. He was a Capuchin friar, stigmatist, confessor, and friend of all who suffer. Also today we celebrate the feast of St. Eunan (Adomnán) who was born in Donegal 624 and died in 704. He became a monk in Iona and was chosen abbot there in 679. One of his writings is the life of Colum Cille.
Prayer
Make us holy, O Lord, and help us to live our lives in such a way that others will come to follow us. We rely on the Lord to help us in our efforts for without His help we can do little. Amen
